Beware of scam letters targeting UK trademark holders
In recent months, there has been a sharp rise in scam letters and fraudulent emails targeting UK businessesโparticularly those with trademarks or pending intellectual property applications. At Trademark Eagle, we want to keep our clients and all UK businesses protected and aware.
What do these scams look like?
These letters or emails often:
- Appear to come from official bodies, solicitors, or barristers.
- Request sensitive information or urgent payments.
- Use official-looking logos and formal language to create trust.
They are designed to mislead and pressure recipients into sharing information or paying unnecessary fees.
The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) warns:
The IPO is aware of these fraudulent practices and has published guidance to help you stay vigilant. You can read their full advice on how to recognise and report scam emails here.
What should you do if you receive one?
- Do not respond to any suspicious letters or emails.
- Contact Trademark Eagle directly. We can verify whether a communication is legitimate.
- Report it to the relevant authority:
- Action Fraud for general scams: www.actionfraud.police.uk.
- The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) if it involves a solicitor or legal firm.
- The Bar Standards Board (BSB) if it claims to be from a barrister.
- The IPO if it relates to trademark or IP matters.
